Very small, warbler-like bird,
olive-green to gray upperparts and
pale breast. Head has bright orange crown patch bordered with yellow
and black, white eyebrows and
black bill. Tail is short and wings have two bars. Weak fluttering flight on shallow wing beats.
Each of the Golden-crowned Kinglet's nostrils are covered by a single, tiny feather.

Range and Breeding

Formerly breeding almost exclusively in the remote, boreal spruce-fir forests of North America,ithas been expanding its breeding range southward into spruce plantings in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

They usually raises two large broods of young, despite the short nesting season of the northern boreal forest.

The Golden-crowned Kinglet is a small species of songbird which breeds in coniferous forests throughout the Americas. This species may be found in Canada, the northeastern and western United States, Mexico and Central America.

During winter months, this bird migrates to the southern United States. Those who live in coastal and southern regions are typically permanent residents.

The Golden-crowned Kinglet forages for its food in trees and shrubs or other low vegetation. This species’ diet consists mainly of insects, insect eggs and spiders. Due to maintained or increasing populations of the Golden-crowned Kinglet, its current conservation rating is Least Concern.
